Introduction to Roundnet
The following are the main rules to make a match at Roundnet. The official rules are many more and can be found both in English and in Italian at the bottom of the page. This is just a summary designed to facilitate the approach to sport: many technical rules present in official competitions are not included.
The rules in English have been translated with the help of artificial intelligence from the official IRF regulation in English and may contain translation errors. The only rules for official matches are English.
In the summary, the rule number is always reported, so that it can be easily found in the official regulation.
PANORAMA
- 2 teams from 2 players.
- The teams are frontally equipped with the roundnet set in the centre.
- The action begins with the service.
- After the service there are no fixed sides.
- Goal: hit the ball on the net so that the opponents can't bring it back.
DURANTE LO SCAMBIO
- Each team has up to 3 touches to bring the ball back to the net.
- When the ball touches the net, possession passes to the other team.
- The exchange continues until the ball is reported on the set and ends when an infringement or a team fails to report it.
- Players can move freely, provided they do not physically hinder the opponent.

TRAINING
How to make a point (3.1)
A team scores a point if:
- The opponents do not report the ball on the set in a valid way;
- The opposing character commits two consecutive service errors.
How to win a set (3.4)
- He wins who first reaches the score (typically 15 or 21 points).
- The set wins with 2 points of advantage.
- To the advantages (then on 14-14 or 20-20) it continues until there are 2 points of difference.
Player positioning (3.8.1)
- The 4 players are around the 90° set.
- Teammates stand next to each other.
Start of game (3.8.3)
- The team you need choose the position first.
- The player on the right side begins to serve.
Player movement
- Receiver: When the player at the service is ready, the receiver can adjust its position and move freely, without restrictions away. (3.8.4)
- Batter’s suit: it can move freely at any time, but it has to stay out of the line until the service is executed. (3.8.6)
Rotation (3.8.8)
Players rotate counterclockwise every time two batters finish their turn.
SERVICES
Service order (4.2)
- The first batter is the one on the right side of the team and serves for 1 point. (4.2.1)
- After the first point: (4.2.2)
- each team serves for 2 consecutive points;
- the batter starts from the left of the companion;
- after the first service you exchange position with the partner;
- the service goes towards the other opponent.
Benefits (4.2.2.1)
If you get to the final score but still need 2 reject points (e.g. 21–20), each player needs 1 point at a time and the positions remain unchanged until the end of the set.
Service execution (4.5)
The service follows 4 steps:
- The batter announces score and service number (first or second);
- The receiver verbally confirms that he is ready;
- The batter announces "service";
- The batter starts the movement and has 3 seconds to throw the ball.
Service Voltage (4.5.2)
The batter has 2 attempts to perform a valid service.
Service Errors (4.6)
It's done if:
- The ball directly affects edge or legs of the set; (4.6.6)
- A Side Pocket occurs: the ball hits the side of the net and changes horizontal direction to the opposite side; (4.6.7)
- The ball exceeds the permitted height of the receiver: it cannot stand above the highest point of the receiver’s shoulders in athletic position; (4.6.9)
- The ball lands on the No Drop Zone line or inside. (4.6.16)
DURANTE IL GIOCO
Network hits (5.5)
The team loses the point if: (5.5.1)
- The ball touches the ground;
- The first contact with the set affects edge, legs or bottom of the net;
- The ball bounces repeatedly on the net;
- The ball comes out of the boundary without an opposing touch;
- The ball falls on the No Drop Zone line or inside it.
No Hit Zone (5.6)
- In the last shot of the action, the player cannot enter the No Hit Zone during the shot.
- The player can enter only after recovering the movement control.
Contact with set (5.7)
- No player can touch the set (net, board or legs) during exchange: it is point loss.
